Improve Fuel Efficiency

Every summer, millions of motorists will take road trips to various areas around the country. With the rising cost of fuel, it is essential that you take all of the necessary steps to get the optimum efficiency out of your vehicle. Here are a few tips.

Routine Maintenance

Far too many car owners underestimate the importance of routine maintenance. Dirty motor oil is far less efficient than clean oil. Simple things like changing the air filter can also make a substantial difference in fuel economy. Do not forget to have your spark plugs and wires checked on a routine basis, especially if your engine is experiencing a rough idle. An engine with an erratic idle will cause your fuel efficiency to dramatically plummet.

Gradual Acceleration

When stopped at a stoplight, there is no need to accelerate at a rapid pace. Not only will this destroy your fuel economy, but you will also put unnecessary stress on your car. Your best bet is to accelerate just enough to keep up with traffic.

Roll Windows Down

Although using the A/C on the highway is fine, using the A/C while driving on busy city streets can definitely put a damper on fuel efficiency. If it is not too hot outside, opt to roll the windows down during city commutes.

Lower Highway Speeds

Fast highway speeds put a lot of wind resistance on your vehicle. If possible, try to drive around 55-60 mph on the freeways.
